About the author

Bernard Jemison has been incarcerated in the state of Alabama for 25 years. In the last two, he has gained notoriety for his guerilla reporting with contraband phones on the inhumane conditions in the Alabama Department of Corrections. He is an inmate advocate for the humane treatment of prisoners. Bernard believes mass incarceration is not the answer to addressing crime in America. He hopes his reporting and essays in The Des continue to expose the world and open eyes to the crisis of Alabama’s prisons and the larger mass incarceration issue.
